In business it is very easy to become so focused on sales and the provision of goods and services that you lose sight of the need to chase customers for payment. When customers do not pay on time, you are providing them with a free overdraft facility. The money is yours and you should ask for it. At Green Door Solicitors we strongly recommend that you have a routine system for monitoring payment due dates on all invoices and a fixed system for chasing payment.   1.  1. Diary all invoice due dates in order that you have a clear picture of payments you are expecting.
  2.  2. If the invoice in question is for a significant sum that could potentially damage your business, call the customer prior to the payment due date to ensure that there are no disputes which could delay payment. If the payment is late, make immediate contact with your customer to establish the reason for non-payment and deal with them as a matter of urgency.
  3. 3. Seven days after the payment due date, if payment has not been received then send a copy invoice with a reminder letter to your customer.
  4. 4. In the absence of payment seven days after the reminder letter and invoice have been sent to the customer, send a further letter stating that if the full and clear funds are not received in the next 14 days, the matter will be referred to solicitors and recovery actions will be taken.
  5. 5. If the payment is not received in thirty days after due date has passed, refer the invoice in question to Green Door solicitors to recover your debt.
